Trolling Fishing

Salt Cracker Charters 34 Crusader

Trolling lets us cover water. Instead of waiting in one spot for a fish to find the bait, the boat moves through productive areas with lines fishing behind it. When a kingfish or Spanish mackerel hits, the quiet part of the trip ends quickly.

Salt Cracker Charters offers private trolling fishing trips from Clearwater Beach Marina for groups of up to six guests. We provide the boat, captain, mate, tackle, bait, fishing licenses, ice, and fish cleaning after the trip.

The species and fishing areas change with the season. Some days we may work nearshore bait schools, reefs, and wrecks. Other trips take us farther into the Gulf. The crew looks at water temperature, bait activity, recent catches, weather, and seasonal fish movement before deciding where to start.

Trolling in the Gulf of Mexico

Trolling is one of the most effective ways to locate fish that are moving through a large area. Multiple lines can be set at different distances behind the boat while the captain works around bait schools, reefs, wrecks, temperature changes, and other likely feeding areas.

The crew chooses the trolling speed, tackle, bait, and lure setup based on the species and conditions. If fish are feeding near the surface, we may use a different approach than we would for fish holding deeper in the water column.

Trolling can also be part of a mixed fishing trip. We may troll while traveling between areas, work above a wreck, or switch to bottom fishing after locating productive structure. A flexible plan often makes more sense than forcing one technique when the conditions say otherwise.

Visit our Clearwater fish species guide for more information about what we catch throughout the year.

Kingfish Trolling

Kingfish are built for speed. A good one can hit hard, strip line from the reel, and turn an ordinary few minutes into a scramble across the back of the boat.

These fish follow bait and commonly move through the Clearwater area during spring and fall. The exact timing changes with Gulf water temperatures, weather patterns, and the location of baitfish.

We may troll around bait schools, reefs, wrecks, and other structures that attract feeding fish. Live bait can also be effective when kingfish gather in a concentrated area.

A 6-hour trip is a practical choice when kingfish are the main target. It gives the captain more time to locate bait, cover water, and adjust if the fish aren’t where they were the day before.

Trolling Around Wrecks and Artificial Reefs

Wrecks and artificial reefs attract baitfish. The bait attracts larger fish, which makes these structures useful places to troll.

Depending on the season, trolling around a wreck may produce kingfish, Spanish mackerel, barracuda, and other fast-moving predators. Several species can use the same structure, so a pass over a wreck can produce something different from what we expected.

If trolling isn’t producing, we may switch techniques and fish live bait around the structure or drop bait toward the bottom. That gives the group a chance to encounter amberjack, grouper, snapper, sharks, and other Gulf species.

What Can You Catch While Trolling From Clearwater?

Kingfish and Spanish mackerel are two of the most common trolling targets off Clearwater Beach. Depending on the season, location, and conditions, trolling may also produce barracuda and other Gulf predators.

The possible catch changes throughout the year. Water temperature, bait movement, wind, currents, and weather all influence where the fish go and whether they’re actively feeding.

No charter can guarantee a particular species. The captain uses recent catches and current conditions to decide where to fish, but the Gulf gets the final vote.

This was our second year fishing with Captain Nick, and once again we had an incredible trip. My son Tyler is now six, and he has literally been talking about fishing with Captain Nick for the past year. Captain Nick has become one of his favorite people, and getting back out on the boat with him was something Tyler had really been looking forward to. Nick has always been incredibly easy to work with, accommodating with scheduling, and just genuinely great with kids. He has a way of treating Tyler almost like one of his own, making sure he is involved, having fun, and getting the most out of the entire experience. As a parent, that means a lot. We had another fantastic day on the water, and Tyler came away with even more memories and stories to tell. Captain Nick goes well beyond simply taking you fishing—he makes the whole trip special. We really appreciate everything he has done for Tyler over the last two years and are already looking forward to fishing with him again next year. Highly recommend Captain Nick and Salt Cracker Charters, especially for families and kids.

Capt Mike and Adam were great. They worked very hard to make sure our group caught fish and were great hosts on the boat. We pulled in fish non stop at a couple spots. It was very comfortable for the ride out and ride in. Plenty of shade and a restroom were a huge plus. Boat is clean. The crew was great and we’ll fish again!

Had an AWESOME experience on the Salt Cracker Charter. Captain Nick and first mate Adam were very knowledgeable and helpful as it was only my second time boat fishing. I caught 10 fish and all were huge I actually had to stop fishing and take a break to let my arm rest from back to back to back catches. Highly recommend. Worth every penny. Definitely coming back!

How Trolling Works

The crew sets several lines behind the moving boat. The baits or lures run at selected distances and depths, allowing us to search different parts of the water at the same time.

When a fish strikes, the crew clears nearby lines and helps the person on the rod. Kingfish and Spanish mackerel can make sudden runs, so keeping the line tight and following directions are important.

Trolling methods may include:

  • Trolling around bait schools
  • Working the edges of reefs and wrecks
  • Running lures or baits at different distances
  • Adjusting speed to match the target species
  • Covering open water between productive areas
  • Combining trolling with live-bait or bottom fishing

Salt Cracker provides the fishing equipment and terminal tackle. You don’t need to bring rods, reels, bait, or fishing licenses.

How Long Should a Clearwater Trolling Charter Be?

Trolling opportunities may be available on shorter charters, especially when bait and fish are close to Clearwater Beach. A 6-hour trip usually provides a better window for targeting kingfish or exploring several productive areas.

Longer charters give the captain more range. They also leave time to change techniques if the trolling bite slows down or another fishing opportunity develops.

Trip length should match the species, season, and people aboard. If your group includes younger children or first-time guests, a shorter trip may be a comfortable place to start. If kingfish are the priority, the extra time on a 6-hour or longer trip can be useful.

Call before booking if there’s a particular species you want to catch. We’ll explain what has been happening and recommend a trip based on current conditions.

Private Trolling Charters for Up to Six Guests

Every Salt Cracker trip is private. Your group gets the boat, captain, and mate without sharing the charter with strangers.

Our 34-foot Crusader sportfishing boats have enclosed cabins that provide shade and a place to get out of the weather. Each boat also has a private onboard restroom.

Your charter includes:

  • A private sportfishing boat for up to six guests
  • An experienced captain and mate
  • Rods, reels, bait, lures, and tackle
  • Fishing licenses
  • A cooler with ice
  • Cleaning and filleting of your legal catch

Bring food, drinks, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, comfortable clothing, and non-slip shoes. Our main Clearwater fishing charter page has additional information about the boats and what to expect.

Is Trolling Good for Families and Beginners?

Trolling can work well for families because the crew handles the setup and keeps the lines fishing. Guests don’t need to cast or understand complicated tackle before the trip starts.

When a fish strikes, the crew helps get the right person on the rod and explains what to do. Children may need help depending on the size and strength of the fish.

Some families prefer trolling because the boat keeps moving and the scenery changes throughout the trip. Others like a combination of trolling and bottom fishing. Tell us the children’s ages and what kind of experience the group wants, and we’ll recommend a practical option.

Visit our Family Fishing Charters Clearwater page for more help planning a trip with children.

Bring Your Catch Back to the Dock

When fishing regulations allow you to keep your catch, the crew will clean and fillet it after the trip. You can take the fish home or ask nearby Salt Cracker Fish Camp about preparing it for lunch or dinner.

Kingfish and Spanish mackerel are commonly enjoyed fresh. The crew can explain how the fish should be handled and which catches are legal to keep that day.

Restaurant preparation is a separate service and charge. Ask about the current options when booking or after returning to Clearwater Beach Marina.

Trolling is a good fit for people who like covering water and never knowing exactly when a fish will strike. The rods can stay quiet for a while, then one reel starts screaming and the whole boat wakes up.
