Grouper Fishing

Gag Grouper(1)

Grouper don’t give you much time to admire the bite. Once one takes the bait, it usually heads straight for the nearest rock, ledge, reef, or wreck. You have to pull hard, keep the line tight, and stop the fish before it gets back into the structure.

That fight is why so many people come to Clearwater specifically to fish for grouper. Salt Cracker Charters runs private grouper fishing trips from Clearwater Beach Marina for groups of up to six guests. We provide the boat, captain, mate, bait, tackle, fishing licenses, ice, and fish cleaning after the trip.

Some grouper trips take us to natural hard bottom and offshore ledges. Others focus on reefs, rock piles, or wrecks. The location depends on the season, Gulf conditions, current regulations, and which grouper species you want to target.

Gag-Grouper

Grouper Fishing From Clearwater Beach

The Gulf of Mexico off Clearwater supports several types of grouper, including red grouper, gag grouper, and goliath grouper. These fish live close to structures where they can find food and quickly disappear when something doesn’t look right.

Our captains fish these waters throughout the year. They use weather, water temperature, recent catches, bait activity, and seasonal fish movement to decide where to start. If one area isn’t producing, the crew can adjust the depth, bait, technique, or location.

Nobody can promise a specific fish before the boat leaves the dock. Grouper fishing involves wild fish, changing conditions, and regulations that can shift during the year. What we can do is recommend the right trip length and give your group a serious shot based on what’s happening in the Gulf.

For a broader look at what we catch, visit our Clearwater fish species guide.

Red Grouper Fishing

Red grouper are one of the Gulf’s best-known bottom fish. They’re commonly found around natural hard bottom, ledges, rock piles, and areas with scattered structure.

A red grouper bite can feel heavy at first, followed by a hard run toward the bottom. The first few seconds usually decide whether the angler gains control or the fish reaches cover.

We commonly use threadfin herring, live pinfish, and cut bait when targeting red grouper. The preferred bait changes with the conditions and what the fish are eating that day. An 8-hour offshore charter is often a solid choice when red grouper are the main target, while a longer trip gives us time to reach additional areas and fish more structure.

Baby Goliath

Gag Grouper Fishing

Gag grouper are aggressive, powerful fish with an impressive ability to get back into the rocks. They may be found around ledges, reefs, wrecks, rock piles, and both nearshore and offshore structure.

Live bait and large cut baits can be productive. Trolling deep-diving plugs may also work when we need to cover water and locate active fish.

The gag grouper harvest season is controlled by state and federal regulations, and those rules can change from one year to the next. Fishing may still be available outside the harvest season, but the fish might have to be released. If bringing home gag grouper is a priority, call before booking so we can discuss the current regulations and recent fishing conditions.

Our Clearwater fishing reports provide recent updates on seasonal fishing and what our crews have been catching.

Gag Grouper

Goliath Grouper Fishing

Goliath grouper are in a completely different weight class. These enormous fish live around wrecks, reefs, bridges, ledges, and other substantial structure. Hooking one can turn into a full-body workout before the fish moves more than a few feet.

We use heavy tackle and large baits when targeting goliath grouper. Even with the proper equipment, the angler still has to pull hard and listen to the crew. These fish know where the wreck is, and they don’t waste time trying to get back to it.

Goliath grouper are heavily regulated. Most encounters involve catch-and-release fishing under current handling requirements. Anyone specifically interested in these fish should ask about regulations, conditions, and the recommended trip length before booking.

You can learn more about fishing this type of structure on our Clearwater wreck fishing guide.

This was our second year fishing with Captain Nick, and once again we had an incredible trip. My son Tyler is now six, and he has literally been talking about fishing with Captain Nick for the past year. Captain Nick has become one of his favorite people, and getting back out on the boat with him was something Tyler had really been looking forward to. Nick has always been incredibly easy to work with, accommodating with scheduling, and just genuinely great with kids. He has a way of treating Tyler almost like one of his own, making sure he is involved, having fun, and getting the most out of the entire experience. As a parent, that means a lot. We had another fantastic day on the water, and Tyler came away with even more memories and stories to tell. Captain Nick goes well beyond simply taking you fishing—he makes the whole trip special. We really appreciate everything he has done for Tyler over the last two years and are already looking forward to fishing with him again next year. Highly recommend Captain Nick and Salt Cracker Charters, especially for families and kids.

Capt Mike and Adam were great. They worked very hard to make sure our group caught fish and were great hosts on the boat. We pulled in fish non stop at a couple spots. It was very comfortable for the ride out and ride in. Plenty of shade and a restroom were a huge plus. Boat is clean. The crew was great and we’ll fish again!

Had an AWESOME experience on the Salt Cracker Charter. Captain Nick and first mate Adam were very knowledgeable and helpful as it was only my second time boat fishing. I caught 10 fish and all were huge I actually had to stop fishing and take a break to let my arm rest from back to back to back catches. Highly recommend. Worth every penny. Definitely coming back!

How We Catch Grouper

Most grouper fishing around Clearwater involves getting a bait close to the bottom or near the structure where the fish live. Depending on the species and conditions, we may use:

  • Live pinfish or threadfin herring
  • Large pieces of cut bait
  • Heavy bottom-fishing tackle
  • Deep-diving trolling plugs
  • Natural ledges and hard-bottom areas
  • Artificial reefs and offshore wrecks

The crew selects the tackle and bait for the fish we’re targeting. You won’t need to bring rods, reels, terminal tackle, or a fishing license.

Grouper fishing takes some effort, but you don’t need years of offshore experience. The captain and mate will explain how to hold the rod, feel the bite, set up for the fight, and keep the fish from reaching cover.

How Long Should a Grouper Charter Be?

Trip length affects where we can fish. Shorter trips may give us access to nearshore reefs, wrecks, and seasonal gag or goliath grouper opportunities. Dedicated red grouper and offshore grouper trips usually benefit from more time.

An 8-hour charter is a practical starting point when grouper are the primary goal. A 10-hour or 12-hour trip allows the boat to travel farther, reach deeper water, and try more fishing areas when needed.

A longer trip doesn’t guarantee more fish. It gives the captain more options, especially when weather, currents, or fish movement make the closer areas less productive.

Tell us which species you’re interested in, how experienced your group is, and whether keeping legal fish is part of the plan. We’ll give you a straight answer about which trip makes sense.

Limit o Red Grouper

Private Grouper Charters for Up to Six Guests

Every Salt Cracker charter is private. Your group gets the boat, captain, and mate without sharing the trip with people you don’t know.

Our 34-foot Crusader sportfishing boats have enclosed cabins for shade and protection from the weather. They also have private onboard restrooms, which people tend to appreciate after several hours offshore.

Each charter includes:

  • A private sportfishing boat for up to six guests
  • An experienced captain and mate
  • Rods, reels, bait, and tackle
  • Fishing licenses
  • A cooler with ice
  • Cleaning and filleting of your legal catch

Food and drinks aren’t included. Bring what your group wants for the day, along with sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable clothing, and non-slip shoes. Our main Clearwater fishing charter page has more information about the boats and what to expect.

Bring Your Catch Back for Dinner

When regulations allow you to keep your catch, the crew will clean and fillet the fish after the charter. You can take it home or ask nearby Salt Cracker Fish Camp about preparing it for lunch or dinner.

There’s something satisfying about eating a fish that fought you all the way up from the bottom a few hours earlier. It’s also a much better ending than carrying a bag of fillets around Clearwater Beach while trying to decide what to do with them.

Restaurant preparation is a separate service and charge. Ask about the current options before or after your charter.

Grouper Fishing for Families and Beginners

You don’t need to be an experienced angler to catch grouper. The crew can help beginners with the equipment, bait, and fighting technique. Grouper are strong fish, so children and smaller anglers may need a hand when a good one takes the bait.

If you’re planning a trip with younger children, let us know their ages and how much time they’ve spent on boats. A mixed-species trip or shorter reef trip may be a better fit than a long offshore run.

Visit our Family Fishing Charters Clearwater page for more information about planning a private trip with children and first-time anglers.
